Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

06/17/03
We have been over in Bimini for 6 days in the past week and a half. The fishing over there has been very good. Mutton snappers bite best during the full moons in May June and July, and usually bite best 1 to 3 days after the full moon. We fished for them the day of the full moon, so I was hoping we would catch a few. We caught more than a few and actually left them while they were still biting. We ended up catching over a dozen in an hour or so. They were still biting when we left, but we had plenty of yellowtails and now had plenty of muttons. It was best to leave and hopefully allow some of these fish to spawn and replenish the reefs. Catching that many muttons in one day is very good, but catching that many in a short time is a good bite, and kept my anglers busy.
We also did some serious yellowtail fishing and went up north of Bimini. We anchored in a spot that produced 3 – 5 pound yellowtails. We actually caught a yellowtail that measure 31 inches. That is a huge yellowtail snapper. The only issue was sharks. You had to get these yellowtails in the boat quickly, or the sharks would get them.
On our way back we ran across a school of dolphin. They were on the small size (2-5 pounds). We kept less than a dozen and left them to get bigger.
On the Miami side, we did fish one day and caught a sailfish, a wahoo, a load of bonitas, and some barracudas and missed some kingfish. With the dolphin finally showing up, we will be targeting them for the next few weeks.
Swordfishing has been hit or miss. We have had a few bites a night, but have not been successful in keeping them on. One night we were 0 for 1, the next night we caught 1 out 2, and the last night we fished we were 0 for 3. We are getting the bites, which means the swords are there, but we need a bit more luck in keeping them on. I have two sword trips this week, and we’ll are going to do everything possible to keep these fish hooked up.
I had a cancellation for July 14th and 15th in Bimini. This is prime time (1 day after the full moon) for the muttons. I already have two rooms reserved, so if anyone wants to get into mutton madness, give me a call.
Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
Capt. Dean Panos
