Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
This week was all about dolphin fishing in the mornings and sailfishing in the afternoons. Lets start off with dolphin. With the exception of one trip this week, we caught our limit of dolphin every morning. We didn’t catch any really big fish, but the schoolies we have been catching have been of decent size. Most of the dolphin have been 3 – 8 pounds, and we haven’t run across any of those really small ones. Those small ones should definitely be released, since they grow so fast, that in about month, they will be the ones that you want to keep. Most of the dolphin we have been catching are 8 – 14 miles offshore, and all of them have been under birds. The dolphin fishing has been so good, that we even went offshore on Sunday, when the wind was honking pretty well. With as bad as the wind was, my 34 SeaVee had no problems handling big seas, and we were pretty comfortable all day. We actually caught our limit of dolphin by 10:30 in the morning and then came in to catch a sailfish or two. We ended up catching two out of three sailfish by 2:30 in the afternoon. My clients had all the dolphin fillets they wanted, plus the memories of tail walking sailfish, and since they had a long drive back home, the called it a day early.
Sailfishing has been excellent. We have caught two or more sailfish on every trip this week. Our best day was catching 5 out 6 sailfish (released all 5), and our slowest day was 2 for 3. All the sailfish action has been in the afternoon, after our morning dolphin adventures. I have been sailfishing mostly from Fowey Light to Government Cut and there has been pretty blue water with a hard North Current all last week. The sailfish have been hitting mostly pilchards both on the flatlines and on the kite.
We also caught a few kingfish last week as well as bonitas. I didn’t have any swordfish trips this past week, but have some set up for next week.
