Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

07/15/03

The heat of the summer is on, but the fishing is hot too. Today we targeted dolphin and we were not disappointed. The dolphin fishing last week was excellent despite the windier weather. Today though the wind laid down, and it was great running offshore in calmer water. Today, the dolphin were all under birds in about 1100 ft of water. By 11:00am we had our limit and decided to run back in to the reef. The reef produced a sailfish and a bonita on the first drift, and then the anglers called it a day knowing we had quite a few dolphin to clean.

This past weekend we fished the SeaVee/Mercury Pompano Saltwater Showdown. We fished north of Pompano (actually Palm Beach) and caught kingfish, blackfin tuna and sailfish. Sailfish were not one of the eligible species, but our tuna and kingfish were enough to put us in 7th place out of 104 boats. Not bad considering we were competing against a lot of good crews and we were around 20 pounds from 1st place. My congratulations to all the winners and all the anglers fishing this tournament, it was a lot of fun.

Last week we had one swordfish trip. We went 0 for 2 that night. We had 2 good shots that night. One fish ate a tip rod down deep. We got tight on him, line was burning out steadily, we got the angler in the harness fighting the fish, and then the hook pulled. An hour or so later, our far jug bait got him, the swordfish came up to the surface (you could see the electralume light on the surface) and as we got tight, we didn’t stay connected. This was the first trip in about a month that we didn’t get one, although we did have the shots. This week I have two swordfish trips and due to a cancellation, I actually have Saturday night open. This is the only Saturday night until August 30th that I have open, so if you want to get in on swordfishing during the summer (calm seas) give me a call.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
