Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
July 24, 2003
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

07/24/03

Dolphin fishing continues to be excellent. Although the dolphin didn’t show up until June, where they usually show up in May, they made up for it with numbers. Hopefully since they arrived late, will mean that they will stay longer and we should expect to see good dolphin fishing into September. Most fish are schoolies ranging from tiny peanuts (should release all little ones) to decent size 5 – 8 pounders. As always there will be bigger fish mixed in. The dolphin fishing was so good this week, that we caught our limit of dolphin by 9:45 am. Yesterday, we didn’t quite get our limit, but the fish we caught were of better size.

When we’re done dolphin fishing offshore, we usually come in to the reef and live bait for a little while. Almost every trip we have caught a sailfish, including yesterday’s trip. There have also been some kingfish and bonitas on the reef.

Swordfishing on the other hand has seemed to have slowed down. We have caught 3 swordfish in our last 6 trips. Still not terrible when you consider that you are catching one of the premier gamefish in the world once out of every 2 trips. According to my log, last year in July was also a bit slow, but we still caught some fish. Last year, August was better, and September through November was phenomenal. I predict the same for this year.

I’m giving a swordfish seminar tonight for the Miami Swordfish Tournament at the Sunset Tavern in South Miami. If you’d like more info, give me a call (954) 805-8231.

Next week, I have some openings for both days or nights, so give me call and lets set it up!

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
