Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
August 25, 2003
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

08/25/03

August proved to be a decent month for swordfish. With the exception of only a few day trips for dolphin, we have been swordfishing quite a bit. We caught swordfish on every trip but one this entire month. Even the trip that we didn’t get one, we had a swordfish follow a bait to the boat and then hang around the Hydro-Glo light.

The swordfish have been eating both live baits and dead squid. What has been odd though, is that the last 5 fish that we missed were all on squid. Usually we you get a bite on a squid, you feel pretty confident, as the swordfish has an easier time eating a dead squid than a moving live bait. That hasn’t been the case lately, as the live bait hook-ups have been better.

We haven’t caught any tremendously big swordfish this past month, the biggest one at 160 pounds. We did hook one that ate a tip rod squid that we got a glimpse of that looked every bit of 400 pounds. After peeling off 400 yards of line – you guessed it – the hook pulled.

Last night we went 1-3 and the fish we caught was around 80 pounds (56 inch lower jaw to fork length). You would think that an 80 pound fish on 50 pound tackle would be an easy fight – think again. The angler did everything right, applied pressure when needed, and it still took 55 minutes to land this fish. The power and speed of these fish is unbelievable. Truly a great fish with incredible speed and strength.

Next month should be even better than August. September through November have been exceptionally good months in the past. Trips are quickly booking for these months, so if you want to catch the true gladiator of the sea – give me a shout.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
