Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

10/18/03
We are starting to see a change in the seasons. It may only be subtle, but you can feel the difference in temperatures. Cold fronts are on their way. Although they are not making it all the way through to South Florida, their impact is still being felt. According to the fisherman in northern and central Florida, there is a big push of sailfish heading southbound with every cold front. The fronts are reaching the upper part of the state, and that is enough to send pods of bait followed by predator down our way.
Last week the day fishing was pretty bleak. It was tough to put a good catch together. Lighter winds, green water and almost no current are not the ideal conditions, and the fishing suffered accordingly. Finally, we got some winds out of the NE and East, and at least it stirred some decent dolphin fishing on the edge. Dolphin were being pushed in on the reef. You could see frigate birds swooping down on schools of flying fish being pushed up by decent sized dolphin. We had our kites out and as the frigates were getting closer, we started catching decent sized dolphin off our kite baits. This is only a prelude of what is about to begin. Soon the action will consist of sailfish, dolphin, kingfish and hopefully some tuna, crashing in on the kite baits as well as the flatline baits. We did see some blackfins crashing flyers the other day, but they managed to elude our baits that day.
The swordfishing has been decent when you can get out. Winds out of the NE and North, make it a bit bumpy, but when the conditions have allowed, it has been good. Last week we had three trips and caught swordies on every trip. We went 2 –3, 1-2 and 1- 2. The swords were not huge, but we did manage to catch and release a 120 pounder last Friday night. It’s always good when you get the official release and then release a great fish like the sword, and watch him swim away.
Next week seems a little light, we have only a few day and a few night trips, but with the change of seasons on us, the fishing is certainly primed for improvement. Don’t miss out when it happens – book a trip and lets go catch-em!
Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
