Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

10/26/03

We fished the first annual Miami Swordfish Tournament this past weekend. This was a two night tournament that started Friday night. There were close to 30 boats fishing this tournament. We fished Friday night despite seas of 8 to 10 foot. It was definitely sloppy which made the fishing tough. We ended up catching the first swordfish of the tournament. I believe there was a total of 10 swordfish caught that night out of the entire fleet, and all the swordfish were released. By the end of the night we were sitting in second place. The wind that night was a solid 20 mph out of the E-NE. When I woke up Saturday morning, the wind had kicked up to 25 – 30 mph. With that said, all but a few of the big boats made it out that night. My client decided that it was probably best to skip this night. Since we were in second place, I was a bit apprehensive, as any fish caught that night would bump us out. As it turns out, one of the big boats – Get Lit – caught the only swordfish Saturday night. With only that fish caught, it bumped us to 3rd place and that is where we ended. 3rd place is not bad considering we only fished one out of the two nights. Congrats to the winners and we’ll have to wait till next year for the next one.

As far as swordfish trips, now with the changed in time from Daylight Savings Time, we will be able to leave one hour earlier, which means we will get back to the dock one hour earlier. That will make the swordfish trips a bit easier for the people who have to go to work the next day. I have quite a few swordfish trips booked in the next month or so, but we are getting to the time of year, that flexibility is key.

The fishing during the day has been improving, and this last blast of NE- E winds should help things out. We have been catching at least one sailfish per trip, along with kingfish during our day trips. Sailfish season is coming onto us quick. So whether it’s swordfish to sailfish to kingfish, etc., give me a call, and Let’s Go Fishing!

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
