Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Double D Charters

11/19/03

It’s been windy since my last report, but we have actually been fishing quite a bit, despite the wind. Sailfish season is upon us and that is primarily what we have been targeting. I use a large sea anchor that I put off my bow. The swings the boat bow first into the seas while I am drifting. It slows down the drift quite a bit, keeping our baits in productive water longer and it also allows the bow of the boat to take the brunt of the seas. This type of fishing is actually very comfortable in the stern of the boat, despite the high winds and bigger seas. With our bow in to the waves, we fly two kites off the stern, one or two flatlines and one or two deep lines. Using this technique, we have been catch, sailfish, dolphin, kingfish, wahoo, cobia, etc. I have even caught grouper off the kite baits.

In the past week or so we catching have been catching anywhere from two to five sailfish per trip. We did have one half-day trip this week, that we didn’t raise any though. The water has quality has not been good, with lots of green water around. There has been some current. Even with those conditions, as I mentioned earlier, we have been having decent success sailfishing. With the conditions bound to improve, the sailfishing should really take off. This past week we have also caught quite a few dolphin and some kingfish. Due to weather (wind), I haven’t been swordfishing since we caught the 349 pounder. I have quite a few day trips and swordfish trips next week, so hopefully the conditions will allow us to do both.

Christmas week is coming quick and the week between Christmas and New Years has always been a busy one. I only have a few of those days left; so if you are interested, please let me know.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
