Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Double D Charters

12/16/03

Since my last report, all I can say is that the fishing continues to be good. We have had excellent clients the whole week and the fishing has been better than average. Sailfish have been cooperating during the day and swordfish have been cooperating at night.

We have been catching anywhere from 1 to 6 sailfish a day. Most of our sailfish have been caught off the kite. This past week, every single sailfish we caught was of really good size. The average Florida sailfish is right around 50 pounds. A few weeks ago, we hade a bunch of little sailfish (less than 25 pounds) invade our area. This past week almost every sailfish we caught was over 70 pounds. For bait, we have been using goggle eyes, pilchards and herring. Besides the sailfish, we have been pretty consistent with dolphin and kingfish. The sailfish bite has also not been at any certain time of the day. A few days we caught sailfish at the end of the day, some days we caught them in the morning and other days we caught them throughout the day (that’s what I like). The dolphin have been mostly on the kites as well, and they have been anywhere from 5 to 20 pounds.

The swordfishing has been excellent. I had 2 trips this past week and we caught 5 swordfish in those past 2 trips. One night we were 2 for 3 and the other night we went 3 for 5. The night we went 3 for 5, we had 8 total bites that night, of which 5 pulled drag and we had them on, and we landed 3 of those 5. What was impressive though is we went 3 for 5 on the swords, and 3 for 4 on the sailfish during the day. We caught 6 billfish that day and night of two different species. That is cool! What has happened on both swordfish trips last week, especially the last sword trip, is that we have been baiting fish on the surface in the HydroGlow light. What a rush to see a 100 pound plus swordfish attacking and billing you bait 15 to 30 feet from you boat. Even though it is at night, with the HydroGlow light, you see everything. Weather has been a factor for the swordfishing, and if we could get a decent patch of weather, we would be swordfishing almost nightly.

We are expecting a strong cold front tomorrow. That means the sailfishing should get even better on Thursday and Friday. As of right now I have those days open, so if you want to catch a sailfish – lets go give it a try.

I still have limited days open during the holidays. If you have family in town and would like to go fishing with us – give me a call and we can set it up.

For now, enjoy the holiday season and lets go catch them up!

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

P.S. If you don’t know what to buy that special someone in your life, how about a gift certificate for a fishing trip. I doubt any fisherman would not like that as present.
