Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Happy New Year!

Another year has gone by and what a bunch of great fishing memories we have had this year. Besides superb sailfishing this past year, we now have great swordfishing as well. This past year alone, we have caught our clients over 100 swordfish for the year and 4 of them over 300 pounds. That was hard to say 10 years ago. Besides the sailfish and swordfish, there has been excellent kingfishing, dolphin fishing, mutton snappers in the Bahamas, etc.

This year started off to a great start. As customary, I fished with a group of good clients on New Years Day. We were seeking sailfish, and we succeeded catching 2 out of 3 that we hooked. Not a record setting day, but a great way to start the year. A few days later we took our first swordfish trip of the year (last night) and we caught 2 out 4 swordfish (we actually had the double line up and the leader up on a 3rd fish, but pulled the hook as he swam away – legal release?). Greeted with flat calm seas (rare in January) and hooking 4 broadbills and catching 2 of them is another great start to the swordfishing year.

For us charter guys, fishing during the holidays is non-stop. Most of the guides (including me) have been booked every day from a week before Christmas to now. The fishing during Christmas week was great with a pretty hot sailfish bite. Fishing this past week though has not been red hot everyday, but we have managed to put a catch together every day. When the sailfishing has been off, we still are catching kingfish and dolphin and even cobia on the kite baits. When the bite is off, we went wreck fishing one afternoon and caught groupers and cobias on the wrecks.

A cold front is approaching tonight, which should get the sailfish rolling again, and I anticipate a pretty good week and weekend of sailfishing. I have Sunday open and a few days next week, so give me a call. I am also trying to catch up on my swordfish trips that I had to rebook due to weather, so if its swordfish you want, lets set up a date now.

Again, I hope everyone had a great New Year and hope the fishing gods will be with you for 2004!

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
