Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Double D Charters

2/1/04

This past week we had a variety of different trips. We had three sailfish trips, 2 swordfish trips and 1 tarpon trip. I am happy to report that we had great success on all our trips.

Starting with the sailfish trips, our best day was 5 for 9. We started the day fishing off of Key Biscayne and had little luck, other than watching a sportfisher hook a double header in front of us. After an hour or so with little success, we moved up to the anchorage and instantly got a triple-header of sailfish. With only one angler on board, we managed to only land one. The rest of the day was followed by 6 singles in which we landed 4 of them. It was a lot of fun! The second sailfish trip, we fished just south of Fowey Light. As we were running down the edge, I spotted a free jumper in 140ft of water. We ran south of the free jumper and pitched out a few flatlines, hoping to intercept his path. Within 30 seconds, he found our bait and the fight was on. After a 20-minute battle, we released our first sailfish of the day. We continued running until we found some current. Putting out the kites and flatlines we hooked 4 more sailfish that day and landed 2 more. Our last sailfish trip was during the Miami Beach Rod and Reel Club Tournament. We ran to the same are we fished and had success the day before, but the conditions had changed. It was a rainy day with little or no current. This made for tough conditions. We did manage to catch kingfish, shark, bonita and we missed one sailfish on the kite.

We also had a tarpon trip the other night and caught two tarpon out of the two tarpon we hooked. We fished live shrimp along the beaches near Gov’t Cut. The tarpon were not huge. Estimated weight was 40 pounds and 60 pounds. They did put up great aerial jumps and fought well on 20 pound tackle.

As I mentioned earlier, we also had good weather were we managed to get in 2 swordfish trips. We had success on both trips. The first trip produced only one strike, but we were lucky enough to stay tight and we landed a 52-inch (lower jaw to fork - `100 inches overall). It was getting late in the night, and my angler who had caught three fish in one night with me last week, suggested we go home. I asked him to wait another half hour and that worked, since our strike came within 15 minutes of that conversation. Our second swordfish trip we had three fish on, and landed two of them. One was a bit over legal and the other one was a chunky 85 pounder. Both trips were with great clients and the swordfish did not let us down.

This week is another busy week, with sailfish, swordfish and tarpon trips planned. I am doing a sailfish seminar at the CUDA club on Tuesday (2/3/04) at 8:00pm. If you are interested in attending or would like charter info, please call me and lets set it up!
