Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
May 10, 2004
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

05/10/04

The fishing off of Miami has definitely improved and for some days it has been very good. There has and continues to be a decent kingfish bite. Most kings are from 10 –20 pounds with some smaller ones and some bigger ones. The blackfin tuna bite has also been good. We have been catching 1 to 2 blackfins per trip pretty steadily. It seems that the area off of Key Biscayne has been the most productive. A good friend of mine and fellow charter captain – Mike on the Lisa L caught 11 blackfins in one day. That’s Red Hot Tuna fishing!

Sailfishing has also been pretty good. Our best day last week was 5 out of 7 sailfish. Almost all of our sailfish bites were on the bigger baits like goggle eyes and big threadfin herring and all of them were on the kite. There has also been a very good bite on dolphin on the edge. Anywhere from 400 feet all the way in to 100 foot, the dolphin action has been good.

Although the weather has been windy for the better part of two weeks, we did manage to go across to Bimini for the mutton run. We had to brave some big seas but the mutton fishing for us was on fire. We ran across for two days and dedicated it to fishing for muttons. After we cleared and checked in to the hotel, we went mutton fishing. The current was ripping and that is usually what I like for these snappers. The wind was going opposite the tide, which made it a bit sloppy but the muttons rewarded us with a steady bite in the afternoon. At one point, I looked over and all three of the anglers had rods bent over with some hefty muttons pulling on the other end. We were heading over again this past weekend but decided to put it off and wait for some better weather.

The bottom fishing and yellowtail fishing in Bimini is excellent. There are also many other islands that over a variety of different fishing as well. This time of year in Chub Cay can be red hot for big dolphin and marlin. Boat Harbour and Harbour Island can be incredible for yellowfin tuna. There are so many places to go and fish, so if you are ready for a fishing adventure, give me a call and lets set it up!

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
