Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Double D Charters

5/3/00

Although it is spring, the past weekend saw almost winter type fishing. The wind was blowing from the NE to East at 15 - 20, and as expected the sailfish bit well. On Sunday we had 5 sails and had two yesterday within the first 30 minutes.

With the East wind, the dolphin have moved in to the edge, and plenty of dolphin have been caught. Yesterday we were able top see two large sharks attempt to eat our kite baits. This is something that is both comical and exhilarating to watch. Shark's mouths are on the bottom and naturally a kite bait is on the top. When our threadfin herring sensed the sharks, the went erratic. The shark was literally coming out of the water with his mouth in the air trying to eat the bait. At times he would roll over and try to eat upside down. Eventually he got the bait and cut us off in seconds. One shark was a hammerhead and the second one looked like a big bull shark. It was exciting to watch but probably wasn't too much fun for Mr. Herring.

Tarpon fishing is still very good in Government Cut. Both the north and south sides of the jetty have been productive. Most of the fish caught have been quite big (100+ pounds). As soon as the sun starts setting, there is usually a pretty hot bite. As the sun gows down, the boats start hooking up, and soon after, everyone is chasing their fish around, as evident by the spotlights being aimed at the line and the fish. We had one fish over 100 pounds drag us around both sides of the jetty and finally released him in the Cut. Give the tarpon trips a shot. It's a great way to end a busy day from the office.
