Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past week was the 35th Annual Pompano Rodeo Tournament. This tournament is fished for dolphin, tuna, kingfish, wahoo, and cobia. There is also a separate sailfish division. Last year we placed 8th, and wanted to improve on our standings.
We ran south both days of the tournament and fished in between Government Cut and the Monument Buoy of off Key Biscayne. Most boats fished North and fished between Hillsboro Inlet and Palm Beach. They seemed to have better luck than we did. We caught lots of fish, but only a couple made the minimum weight size of 15 lbs. We weighed in a 28 lb. blackfin tuna and a 20 lb. dolphin. We had at least a dozen kingfish, but most were right at 14 lbs. We also had a few dolphin, but they too were under the 15 lb. limit.
There has been a real good tuna bite late in the afternoon. Tuna like those low level light conditions, and seem to favor the after 5:00 p.m. crowd. Most blackfins caught have been over 20 lbs., with at least a couple of fish in the mid 30's. This same time last year aboard the Double D, we caught a world record blackfin tuna at 39 lbs. 8 ounces, caught on 12 lb. test line. Finish a day at the office with some good afternoon fishing. Afternoon trips are available at a reasonable rate, so give us a call and lets catch them up.
Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
Capt. Dean Panos
