Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
June 27, 2000
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past week saw fair fishing. The fishing conditions were flat calm seas, but unfortunately only a little bit of current. The fishing offshore saw a decent dolphin bite, but most fish were less than 5 pounds.

As the weekend ended, and come Monday the wind and seas increased. That was enough to spark up the fishing. On the deeper side of the edge, there was a fairly good north current. The blue water edge had moved in to about 150-ft depth, compared to 300 ft a couple of days ago. Our first drift with a trio of anglers visiting from London England yielded a 25-pound kingfish. This fish hit as we were setting out the first flatline. Talk about quick action. The second drift produced dolphin up to 15 pounds. We caught almost a dozen and most of the dolphin were caught on goggle eyes on the kite. As we brought in the dolphin, their buddies followed, and we were able to catch some more by casting jigs at them with 10 lb. spinning tackle. The lighter tackle certainly makes the fish more fun to catch.

The last fish that was being sought, was a sailfish. The third drift in about 225 ft of water, the short kite bait (goggle eye) was devoured by a hungry sailfish. After a 20-minute fight, we had a sailfish next to the boat for a quick picture and a healthy release. On the fourth drift we hooked and landed a 50-pound reef shark, and caught him with no wire leader. One of the anglers was feeling a bit of the mal de mar, and his buddies decided that he had suffered enough. Back at the marina, the fish were filleted, and the anglers were going back to England, only this time with many memories of the outstanding fishing South Florida has to offer.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
