Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
July 24, 2000
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

The dolphin fishing has been decent offshore, but most fish have been small

(2 - 8 lbs.), and the dolphin have been as far out as 30 miles. Most fish are under birds, but some of the larger fish have been under debris.

The kingfishing to the north has been pretty good in the morning, and a few blackfin tuna have also been caught to the north.

This past weekend we fished the Mercury Pompano Beach Saltwater Shootout. We ended up with fifth place, which was very respectable, especially considering the competition we fished against. We had a very good kingfish bite in the morning, but it shut down after 11:00 am. Almost all of our kingfish were over the 10-lb. minimum, and we caught over a dozen fish. Some of the anglers anchored up and were live chumming with pilchards all day. Those guys got the occasional blackfin tuna bite.

For the past two weeks I have been using a new electric reel for my kites. It's made by Dolphin Electreel. Although they are one of my sponsors, I would not be biased. I switched to these reels for some important reasons. These reels have some definite advantages over the competition. For one they have a built in crank handle, just in case the electric reel fails. Nothing is more frustrating than fishing either in a tournament or having to chase down a sailfish with a broken electric reel. During last year's Miami Billfish Tournament, the last day of the tourney the wind was blowing 30+ mph. We had both kites out and had a sailfish on. The bite was close in and there were many boats fishing close to each other. We had to chase down the fish, but had to bring in the kites to maneuver around the other boats. Wouldn't you know it, but both electric reels failed. One electric reel had a stripped gear, and the other one lost a motor. We had to pull in the kites by hand against 30 knots of wind, while moving in and around other boats. This new reel has a built in crank handle, that if the electric fails, just reel it in by hand. They also seem to be built a lot tougher. Give the reels a try, I doubt you will be disappointed. Visit their website at www.dolphinelectreel.com

This wee we have a couple of dolphin charters, then go across to the Bahamas for a three-day charter. If you have any fish stories, give shoot over an e-mail.

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,
