Miami - Haulover to Fowey Light

Capt. Dean Panos
July 31, 2000
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

The dolphin fishing has been, as you would call dolphin fishing. One day it is good and the next day it is mediocre. For instance, on Friday the fishing was just OK. We caught 15 or so dolphin, but at least almost all were over 10 lbs. Then we came in and fished the reef. The next day we ran across to the Bahamas, and found dolphin 10 miles away from Bimini. There were a lot of dolphin, but most were small schoolies. Until then we had not seen a bird or a piece of debris. Yesterday, coming back from the Bahamas we hit a big school of dolphin and caught near our limit within 20 minutes.

The fish story of the week though goes to the kingfishing in the Bahamas. A couple of weeks ago, I reported decent kingfish action to the north. This weekend charter in the Bahamas, saw only a few kingfish, but they were grand daddy size. We missed a kingfish of about 40 lbs. on Saturday, but caught another one close to 20 lbs. The second day we caught the mack daddy. This fished weighed in on the scales at Keystone Pt. Marina was 55 lbs. All the kingfish caught were caught on goggle eyes suspended from the kites. We also caught our limit of yellowtail snapper up to 4 lbs., some smaller size grouper, cero mackerel, sharks, barracudas and plenty of dolphin. This fishing was non-stop for two days, and I was happy to get some rest last night.

Fishing right now in the Bahamas is very good, and the snapper fishing will start to die off as the fall approaches. If you are interested in a Bahama charter give me a shout, before the summer passes away. Then again, there is always next year, although it seems so far in the future.

If you have any fish stories, send over an e-mail. Would love to here from you!

Tight Lines and Good Fishing,

Capt. Dean Panos
