Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fall fishing is right around the corner. Although you wouldn't be able to tell with the mid day temperatures, the mornings have been a couple of degrees cooler. Baitfish have been pretty easy to find. The inlets, beaches, piers and local patch reefs all have had bait. There have been pilchards, threadfin herring and cigar minnows. Schools of pilchards can also be found in Biscayne Bay.
The fishing offshore has been pretty fair. There are a lot of bonitas offshore. When the action is slow, scale down your tackle and the bonitas can be put up quite a fight on 4 - 10 lb. test. If you can chum up the bonitas behind your boat, flyfishing for them is quite a blast. Sailfishing has been much better in the past week. Some of the boats livebaiting on the edge have had one or two shots a day, and a few boats have done even better. There has been a decent North current, and a blue water edge in to about 125-ft of water. Although the sailfish have been caught in a variety of depths from 900' to 90', concentrate your efforts on the blue water side of the edge.
Dolphin fishing has been hit or miss. Most of the boats have been doing better in depths of less than 1000 ft. The guys running 20 - 25 miles offshore have not faired as well. There were scattered weeds in from 800 - 600 ft of water. Some patches held fish, while others didn't. The wahoo fishing has slowed down this past week, but the boats that caught em were live baiting or trolling between 400 - 200 ft depths. Kingfishing in the morning has been OK. The area around Key Biscayne seemed to be holding more fish. Within the next month, the kingfish should definitely take center stage.
If you have any fish stories, send over an e-mail. Send over some pictures and maybe we can post them on the fishing report sites. Would love to here from you!
