Fishing Report for Northern Miami-Dade County

Capt. Dave Kostyo
January 22, 2007
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Once again it's time to get caught up with the reports on what's been happening aboard Knot Nancy. Most of my trips have been of the night time tarpon variety. More on that later.

Offshore, I've had one trip since my last report. On that day (1/19) we had south current, green water, and wind that varied from NNW/NNE @ 8 - 12 knots. Little to no action was the word up and down the coast. We ran offshore a piece to try and find better water. We set up in 750 feet and were being pushed offshore. At 800 feet, a sailfish ate a flatline pilchard and gave us our hook back on its first jump. At 850 feet, the stern flatline took off and after a 10 minute fight, Kevin Brown caught his first yellowfin tuna.

We found the hard blue/green edge in 900 feet.

Back inshore, the brightest spot has been seatrout fishing. Sunday (7/21) we had perfect tide conditions for a half day morning trip. John Masel along with Gary, Shelly, and Rodney had lots of fun catching and releasing various size seatrout. When the action is hot, it's hard to keep track of exactly how many fish we caught and released, however, it would be safe to say that it was somewhere in the 24 - 30 range.

Now for the tarpon report. The best thing I can say about tarpon fishing is that it has been very inconsistent. Let me tell you what I mean by that. On Sunday (1/14) we had 4 shots between Haulover and the Bay. Every fish managed to throw the hook either early or late in the fight. Thursday evening (1/18) we caught and released 1 out of 2 at Haulover and had 1 in the Bay that ate an artificial over live bait. Friday evening (1/19) we had to work very hard to get 1 fish at Haulover. It was an 80 pound fish caught and released by 12 year old Trevor Johnson. Saturday evening (1/20) we started at Haulover where we caught 1 ladyfish. We ran down to Government Cut and fished both the north and south sides with no action at all. So as you can see, its been inconsistent at best. I'll be tarpon fishing Monday - Wednesday evening and we'll see if the action improves.
