Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Saturday (10/20) was a half day trip with the Chapin Family. Harry & Errin and their two children Charlotte & Sam where down in Miami to attend the Miami/New England game and wanted to sample the fishing offshore. The weather report called for a 70% chance of rain and it was holding true until about 5 minutes after I arrived at TNT Marine Center. The rain stopped and we didn't even see a possibility of rain during the entire trip. The wind was ESE/SE @ 4 - 7 knots. There was no current and green ugly water until about 400 feet. A few throws of the castnet and we had all the bait we could ever need. The first stop was south of the Twin Towers in 170 feet. The downrigger got the only action in the form of a small sailfish that was about 2 1/2 feet long. The fish put on a great aerial show to everyone's delight and Charlotte had the honors of fighting the fish as she picked the rod with the red line on it. She did a great job of making short work of getting the fish boat side. A quick photo opportunity and the fish was released. The next stop was off the Cuban Hole where we slow trolled baits in the 110 - 160 feet range with no action despite some heavy chumming. We got a call from Larry and Bruce on Lady Lo who said they were in to some dolphin about 7 miles SSE of Haulover. We ran out to the general area and found a weed line and slow trolled north on it. A piece of bamboo floating vertically in the line did the trick after throwing out a scoop of pilchards. Sam, Errin, Charlotte, and Harry all got in on the action. When the excitement stopped, we had caught and released 5 dolphin and kept 1. We returned to the bamboo, however, there were no more dolphin in the area to be found. On the way in, Charlotte was happy when we stopped at the location where we caught bait and she released all the remaining bait.
