Sailfish in Miami

Capt. Dennis Forgione
January 28, 2009
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

After a really strong cold front (for Florida anyway). 39 degrees, when did we last see that?? Excellent sailfishing off Miami, boats getting up in the double numbers. When sailfish run like that during a cold front it is not uncommon to hook 3 or 4 at a time. They travel in schools and if you can stay with them you can catch several in a day. These next couple months have potential for days like that. Aside from the sails, there have been some dorado travelling with them. Alot of fish in the 5-10 pound range and a 20 pounder thrown in from time to time to keep everyone on their toes. The spanish and king mackeral fishing has slowed quite a bit. A few fish around in the early morning hours, but quickly slows down. The wrecks have been producing mutton snappers, groupers up to 30 pounds, and some big amberjacks.
The evening tarpon fishing has been excellent. The best I've seen it for this time of year in quite some time. We've been getting up to 8 shots a night at them. In a 4 hour trip thats alot of action. Lets go fishin !!

Target Species:

Dolphin, sailfish, snapper, grouper, tarpon
