Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
The fishing in Miami has definitely picked up! With the change in the weather there has been a change in the fishing for the better. The previously hard to find sailfish have finally shown up in better numbers and the sail bite has turned around. We have caught sailfish on all of our past trips and even had a couple of days where we caught multiple fish. Most, if not all, of our fish have caught on the kite. In addition to the sailfish the mahi-mahi have also made a good showing. A large number of the mahi have been gaffer size fish. We had several days where we could have put a large number of mahi in the fish box but only limited ourselves to what we could eat in a couple of meals.
The spring kings have not disappointed. The kings have been chewing almost everything we have put in the water. The fish have ranged from small snakes to large smoker size fish north of 30#'s. One of the most frustrating things has been the ability of these fish to slash our bait right behind the hook. But I guess this is part of the game and seeing a large king skyrocket on a large surface bait is pretty cool even if you don't catch them all. We had 2 days where we were able to limit out.
The bottom bite is starting to get hot. The grouper season opens May 1st and I for one can't wait. Right behind these groupers will be mutton snapper, my favorite fish. The bottom fishing should continue to improve well into the summer months. Below are some pictures of the groupers we have caught the past 2 weeks. Although they are black groupers I prefer to call them "Lucky Grouper" because they bit a couple days away from the open season. All the grouper pictured below were all vented and released.
I have gotten a couple calls about blackfin tuna. To be honest I have seen some small 8-15 pound fish caught but none of the real large fish that we get in here April and May. I suspect that it is only a matter of time till they do show up and when they do I will report on it but until then I'm holding off doing strictly tuna trips.
Tarpon fishing remains very good and we have been able to maintain our 2-4 fish average thus far. We should see no downturn in the tarpon bite. Well that is it for now. If you would like to get in on any of the action or do a late afternoon trip, my personal favorite, give me a call and let's make it happen. Till next time.
Best of Luck…
