Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Summer fishing off Miami is prime time for mahi-mahi. These gamefish travel in large schools while moving to the north in the Gulf Stream. We book more full days during the summer because it allows us to make it further offshore to target dolphin. These fish tend to congregate under floating debris, near weed lines and patches, as well as areas with a lot of bait.
During 2016-2017, we spent about a year custom building the ultimate boat for Miami Fishing Charters. With a large tuna tower, 150 gallons of livewell space, and top of the line electronics, we are rigged and ready for anything that swims off of Miami. During the summer, our tuna tower gives us an advantage while sight fishing for schools of mahi. Mahi (dolphin fish) typically swim near the surface and are easily sight fished with live bait and spinning tackle. We often get into big schools of fish and end up returning to the dock with 20+ fish on an average day.
On half days during summer, we usually stick to fishing on the edge. Kingfish are the primary species we target on the edge during summer with by-catch in the form of wahoo, blackfin tuna, barracuda, and more. In addition, the shipwrecks hold amberjack, grouper, and more. When we aren't dolphin fishing, we typically troll the drop off and bottom fish to get the rods bent.
We have a little under a month left in summer but the dolphin fishing has stayed strong. Fall is a welcome break from the summer heat and usually means the sailfish will return.
