Summertime Fishing Update

Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

The air temperature is hot, humidity is high, and the water temperature is starting to feel like bath water. These are all signs that summer has arrived and will be with us for several months.
I have always referred to the month of July as bonito (little tunny) month. They have not disappointed since late June and thus far in July. Along with the bonito, we are also catching amberjack, kingfish, mutton snapper, and a few sailfish and blackfin tuna. To find these fish, you'll have to adjust your technique to fish mid-depth to the bottom where the water is cooler. Yes, you can catch sailfish on mid-depth and bottom rods.
For those who like to troll, it has been very difficult at best for the past several weeks due to the numerous lines of Sargasso weed that have been coming through our area. Once again, summer time is when trolling deep will shine.
Move further offshore in search of dolphin/mahi-mahi and there has been no lack of Sargasso weed. For the most part, the birds have been putting us on both dolphin and skipjack tuna. There have been plenty of dolphin, however, most have been under the 20" minimum size. I've been in a large school of dolphin and we are throwing back 9 out of 10 fish we catch. The boat who is 100' away from me is throwing every fish in their fish box.
Tarpon fishing has become hit and miss. Up to my last trip we've been catching 2 to 4 fish per trip. On my last trip, we marked them, saw them roll, and watched them bump our bait but never take it. The fish are there, just not feeding well.
Don't let the summer heat keep you from fishing. Fish early, fish late, or fish after dark to beat the heat.
