Tarpon Catching

Capt. Carl Ball
April 11, 2009
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Miami and Biscayne Bay tarpon fishing is still very good. Catching giant tarpon can require a substantial amount of energy, as I have witnessed from several customers this season so far. Pulling directly against the tarpon with the rod pointed nearly at it puts maximum pressure on the fish and allows the tarpon to tire itself out. Putting a big bend in the rod requires a lot of force by the angler while exerting less pressure on the tarpon. It's really just a simple law of physics. The longer the lever, the more force you have to apply at one end to equal the same force at the other end. Here are a few pictures that show this point.

Miami Fishing Forecast:

Tarpon have begun there annual migration and sight fishing will be good for them. The bonefish and permit will be much happier and should continue to be good.

Target Species:

Bonefish, permit and tarpon

More Fishing Reports:

I specialize in both fly fishing and light tackle sight fishing for bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook and shark. My area of guiding expertise extends from the northern reaches of the Florida Keys to Miami’s Biscayne Bay and the waterways of Fort Lauderdale. Depending on your preference, Key Biscayne in Miami gives the angler the best opportunity to catch a variety of species, whereas in Fort Lauderdale, the focus is more on live baiting for tarpon, snook, jack crevalle and barracuda.
