WARM SOUTH FLORIDA, HOT FISHING, GET EM SPORTFISHING CHARTERS

Capt. Alan Sherman
March 4, 2012
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

Time for a new fishing update!

Before I start my latest fishing update I would like everyone to go to Get Em Sportfishing Charters on Facebook and like my page. Thanks!
Now to the fishing!

Things haven't changed that much since my last report. Still seems a lot like spring or maybe the beginning of summer. I know that these unusual weather conditions have me confused as to whether I should get out my summer clothes or keep the winter stuff nearby so I am sure the fish are just as confused as I am. Anyhow the positive side to all of this is that the fishing has been quite good if you have the time to fish. Windy weather conditions continue to handcuff me when it comes to where I can fish. Last year I was still hammering bottom fish off the patch reefs but this year the winds have been mostly out of the east and strong keeping me inside the bay. For the most part that has not been a problem because I have been able to find snook for my clients on almost every Biscayne Bay charter during the day. Along with the catch has been a fair amount of gag groupers for catch and release, a few small tarpon, lots of sea trout, at times more 4 to 6 pound jack crevalles that an angler can handle plus bluefish, Spanish mackerel, a dog snapper, ladyfish, barracudas and a beautiful 8 pound redfish. All caught in Biscayne Bay but not on every charter. On the few days that I have been able to get offshore the kingfish and cero and Spanish mackerel have kept us busy. Flamingo fishing has been hit or miss with me mostly because every charter I have had in the Park has been during windy days. We have had snook, redfish, jacks, sharks, ladyfish and snapper on almost every trip fishing protected areas but I have not been able to fish for mackerel, bluefish, pompano and cobia in the open waters due to the wind. Freshwater fishing has been fair due to the high water levels this year but that should change in the next month or so. I did have a nice day out on the Tamiami Trail with my son Zach where we released over 20 snook on Rapala plugs and Hookup lures.

Recent Catches:

Fishing out of Key Biscayne with Keith and his brother John. With the wind up a little and a live well full f bait we hit the patch reefs and ended up releasing 15 gag groupers to 5.5 pounds, 3 black and six red groupers plus porgies, bar jacks and mangrove snappers.

Back in South Bay and once again and a bit windy. Today I am with Tino. Fishing was tough and we only landed a few bottom fish before hitting a snook spot where we released one snook before heading in for lunch at Hurricane Harbor.

Today I am with Jeff and Max in Biscayne Bay. After getting some bait from Lester the Live Bait Man we hit some of my favorite spots. The guys caught barracudas, jacks, sea trout and went two for five on snook release.

Was out of town the week during the Miami International Boat Show.

Back on the water with Matt, Samantha and 8 year old Luke for a half day trip in the Bay. Luke really likes to fish and he had a lot of fun as did his mom and dad reeling in jacks, bluefish, mackerel, barracudas and snook with each of them releasing at least one snook each.

Today I have Ron on the boat and after filling the well with live pilchards we decide to give the offshore waters a shot since the winds had lain down a bit. On the way out I saw a splash off the side of the boat and tossed out a handful of baits to see what happened. In no time fish were crashing all around us. I anchored the boat with my new Minn Kota I-Pilot and we started fishing. In two hours we had at least 30 hits but landed only two cero mackerel to six pounds plus a five pound Spanish mackerel and released five gag groupers. We were using long shank hooks and the fish either cut us off or spit the hook as we fought them to the boat. We weren't looking to land the fish just have fun with them and we did. We ran offshore looking for dolphins and found some feeding tunas but could not get them to eat. On the way in I spotted a piece of floating debris and some tripletail hiding next to it. We landed one 20 inch fish and I netted the debris along with a 14 inch tripletail that was hiding under the debris with my landing net. We released the small fish.

Back on the water with Steve, Steve and Joel. After getting all the bait we needed with one throw of the net we headed offshore into a mild sea and anchored the boat with the I-Pilot in an area that had a lot of birds feeding. Four hours later the guys had landed five kings releasing the two smaller fish and landed nine mackerel and a nice mutton snappers. We had kings to 20 pounds sky rocketing all around us plus mackerel slashing our chum. It was quite exciting. On the way pack o the dock we hit a spot and released eight gag groupers to 22inches.

Today I am in Flamingo with Norman and a friend and yes the wind is blowing. The guys wanted some fish to take home so we hit a few trout spots but only caught small trout, lots of ladyfish and jacks. The next area we saw a crocodile and lots of rosette spoonbills and released two snook. We moved on and caught a nice 21 inch sea trout and hooked two big sharks releasing one that was close to 60 pounds on 10 pound Stren monofilament line. In our last spot of the day we landed six keeper trout and released at least that many plus snappers, jacks and ladyfish.

Back in Biscayne Bay with Vince, Bay and their dad Herman. After catching all the bait we needed we hit a bunch of spots throughout the bay landing and releasing mackerel, bluefish, barracudas, jacks, and going three for six on snook.

Back in Biscayne Bay and again after catching all the bait we needed Michael, Jay and Ronnie had their hands full catching and releasing jacks in the 4 to 6 pound class one after another until their arms were aching. We then moved on looking for something different and found an 11 pound tarpon that we released. After that we got into some hot snook action losing a few nice ones, releasing a 13 pounder fish and landing a nice seven pound fish. The catch of the day was a lost 8 pound redfish.

Last trip of the week is with Ken and his brother Bob and Ken's son Dave in Biscayne Bay. While I tried to catch bait the guys threw Hookup lures and released one trout after and another before the fish moved on. I got a good throw on the bait and loaded the boat up with pilchards. We hit a snook spot and missed two fish and spotted a third but it wouldn't eat. We moved on releasing a barracudas before stumbling on a school of 4 to 6 pounds jacks. The guys released at least 15 plus a nice 2 pound dog snapper before asking if they could rest so we moved on. We hit another snook spot and had a good one on but lost him and missed a few other strikes before finishing the day by releasing another 15 trout and a bluefish plus a bunch of barracudas and needlefish.

Took the afternoon off to do a little fishing with my son Zach. Hit the water just after noon, caught all the bait we needed with just two casts of the cast net and even though the winds were out of the south southeast at 20 we headed just offshore and anchored in 20 feet of water in a spot I had caught some mackerel in a few days before. We started chumming and in no time we had Spanish mackerel slashing through the chum. Fishing with the live baits and Rapala X Raps we caught mackerel non-stop. After a few hours of the mackerel fishing we headed up into an area where we had caught snook, redfish and tarpon recently. After fishing this area we released a bunch of jack crevalles in the four to eight pound range along with a bunch of feisty barracudas. The fish ate live pilchards and Rapala Skitter Walks.
