The Weathers a Changing and the Fishing is Great in South Florid

Capt. Alan Sherman
August 29, 2011
Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

After a full week of challenging weather conditions from Hurricane Irene finally South Florida is seeing a return of somewhat normal weather conditions. Almost all of last week we had winds from the west that were at least 10 degrees hotter than normal and the heat alone kept my anglers from fishing. For me this couldn't have come at a better time. I am expecting my new boat to be delivered to Bob Hewes Boats today or tomorrow and expect Mike at Bob Hewes Boats to have everything installed on the new boat in a matter of days.

My new boat is a 22' Pathfinder XL Tournament Edition Bay Boat and once again powered by a state of the art Yamaha SHO 250 Four Stroke outboard engine. If you are in the market for a new outboard engine than you still have a couple of days to take advantage of Yamahas incentive program. On select models you can get up to $1500 in incentives or an extended 3 year warranty. Act fast before this program expires. Also on my new boat will be a Minn Kota 36 volt I Pilot trolling motor. Set a course or a location and the trolling motor will take you there and keep you there. My new boat will have a Minn Kota Talon. The Talon is a shallow water anchor. For my depth recorder my new boat will have a Humminbird GPS/Depth Recorder. I will have a Continental Trailer with DMAX disk brakes. These brakes are touted as the trailer disk brakes of the future and of course I will have the Air Tight Sport Model Bearing Protectors on my hubs.

Now down to the fishing! For a good part of the week most anglers and guides were off the water waiting for the water and the conditions to settle down. One thing I noticed one early morning this past week was a drop in the temperatures that made me think about fall. Only for a few minutes because before I knew it the west hot winds picked up and changed that magical feeling in the air. September is just a few days away and snook season on the Atlantic side will reopen.

Also the weather should start to change a little as temperatures way north of us are starting to drop just a little the baitfish schools will start to move south and before we know it the Fall Migration of baitfish and predators will have started. This normally starts in late September but because of hurricane Irene temperatures have already started to drop on the northeast coastlines due to Irene's west winds pulling cooler air down from Canada.

Fish are smart but sometimes not that smart and once they feel that initial temperature drop their instincts suggest they start heading south. I fished three times last week. The first day we started in the ocean and had one bite that resulted in a bonito. We then moved inshore and we struggled and caught just a few sea trout. The next day on our way to the ocean in the middle of North Biscayne Bay we came upon a flock of diving birds and a fish feeding frenzy.

Casting Rapala Skitter Walks and Flat Raps we released bluefish, big ladyfish, snappers and sea trout. Once out in the ocean we spent a day without a hookup. The only hits we had were off of a Rapala XRMAG30 X RAP Magnum that we trolled along the only broken weedline we saw. We didn't see the actual strikes but later after examining the new plug it had quite a few scratches on it that we figured came from a wahoo or a barracuda. Best action was in the Bay where we should have stayed.

Next day on the water again we stopped where the birds had been the day before. The birds weren't there but the fish were. Casting Rapala Skitter Walks, SubWalks, Flat Raps and Clackin Raps the surface and subsurface action was nonstop for over an hour. The water was slick calm, time was 10 AM and sea trout to three pounds, ladyfish in the two and three pound range, mangrove snappers, barracudas and a pompano were attacking the plugs like they hadn't seen a piece of food for days. As the wind and sun got high the fishing slowed down so we headed offshore. Once again we should have stayed inshore because the only action we had was along a buoy where we released small bonitos and big bluerunners that ate Rapala Clackin Raps and Skitter Walks.

Well that catches us up for now.

I expect the fishing to turn on starting today and lasting right up to the next tropical system whenever that might be.

I do have scattered openings for the next three weeks so don't hesitate to give me a call so you too can have sore arms, big smiles and pictures of what you caught on the Get Em with Captain Alan Sherman!

Rick Berry of Key Largo Rods (www.keylargorods.com) recently got in a new shipment of jigging rods. There model numbers are 843 and 844. These are 7 foot spinning rods with a lot of beef that will easily handle 12 to 30 and 15 to 40 pound braided line and a one to two ounce vertical jig. I have been using them for live bait fishing for snook, tarpon, sailfish, bonitos and dolphins and am very excited about the strength and feel of these new rods. I can't wait to give them a shot on snapper and grouper on the reefs! Check out the Key Largo Rods web site or give the shop a call and have a few made up.

Want to stay cool and look like you belong on the water? Than gear up with some Columbia Sportswear! For starters slip on a pair of cool fitting and quick drying Aruba III Zip Off Pants. They are so light you won't even know you're wearing them and they quickly turn into shorts if you feel the need. Find yourself in Flamingo in Everglades National Park where at times bugs can be a problem then add The Bug Shield long sleeve shirt that has the new Insect Blocker technology that keeps six-legged pests at bay and it offers Omni-Shade UPF 40 sun protection, and Omni-Wick advanced evaporation technology that keeps you cool, dry, and collected - leaving you free to focus on the adventure at hand. And then last but not least slip on a pair of Omni Free gloves and neck-buff that is outfitted with a UPF 30 sun protection enough sun protection to get the Skin Cancer Foundation's seal of recommendation.

I have recently changed outboard engines on my 22' Pathfinder XL Tournament Edition Bay Boat. I had an opportunity to put one of the first Yamaha SHO 250 Four Stroke outboards on my boat and the difference has been just amazing. This engine has 25 more horsepower but carries 77 less pounds allowing me better hole shot while giving great cruising fuel efficiency. What more can a boater ask for?
I have been wearing a lot of Columbia Sports Wear on my fishing charters and the new Blood & Guts shirts are amazing. I have had mackerel, cobia and snook just splatter me with blood and one good washing and the shirts are as good as new.
