Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report
We have a lot to catch up since my last fishing report several weeks ago. Since them, we have had very busy periods mixed in with periods of poor weather. The cold fronts are a mixed blessing because they push fish down here to South Florida but sometimes they pack very strong winds that make the offshore fishing a bit dicey especially for kids and beginners. Fortunately, we were able to reschedule some trips and fish inshore on others. We also fished for tarpon and snook a few days ago with good success.
Offshore, the sailfish bite hasn't been as consistent as we are accustomed to this time of the year. It seems like we either have good looking water and no current or green water with current. Timing is everything with sail fishing and it is only a matter of time before things the right conditions converge. As I write this report the wind is cranking hard out of the East and I'm pretty sure the bite will turn back on.
The bottom has also been producing nicely with a little bit of everything. We've been fishing a lot of deeper wrecks and rubble piles and catching a mixed bag of amberjack, almaco jacks, grouper, and some really big almaco jacks. Some of these deeper honey holes are a great target on days when the current is light and we can hold our position a little better. Most of our fish have been caught on live bait but they will also eat a vertical jig if you don't mind a little workout.
On another note, we will be springing forward this coming weekend allowing us to fish later into the day. Spring is by far the best time to fish South Florida for two main reasons. First, is the variety of fish that are pouring through and second is the size of the fish that can be caught. One fish that will be showing up very soon is the blackfin tuna. Blackfins 25 - 35 pound class will be crashing our live baits very soon. Besides the blackfins, we will continue to see mahi, cobia, smoker kingfish, and the occasional yellowfin tuna.
