Miami - Saltwater Fishing Report

There's no better time to sit down and write a fishing update then during the years strongest cold front. So let's get down to it!
During the next few days we are forecasted to have strong winds and temperatures in the upper 30's. I know you guys from up north are laughing because the upper 30's are nothing compared to what some are experiencing with negative temperatures. I can't remember when the last time we had temperatures in the upper 30's. I know it's been a long time though. I kind of wish we had had this weather months ago because that's what gets out fall and winter fishing going and that is something once again we haven't see in many years. Is it too late to trigger a real migration of fish? We won't know for a few days. I do know that there has been a pile of Spanish mackerel about 100 miles north of us that seemed pretty happy to stay where they are. Maybe this will push them and other migrating fish into our area. Let's see what happens when things warm up again.
Recently I have fished North Bay, offshore and in Flamingo.
North Bay has been a real disappointment with very few fish to target. We have a lot of bait in the Bay but nothing feeding on them except a few small jacks and small bluefish. Sea trout fishing has been pretty slow but that happens this time of the year and it won't get better till mid-March when the trout start to spawn that we see them schooling up again. During recent North Bay charters we have had a few small bluefish, a few small mackerel, a few sea trout, a few small to medium size jacks and a few bull sharks.

I haven't fished South Bay in a while mostly because we have had a lot of wind to contend with but I hope to get some days in that area soon. It was about this time last year that we were catching fish there last year.
I had an opportunity to fish offshore last week. The offshore fishing has been tough for the bigger boats for months. There was a push of sailfish that lasted almost two days and the guys that were on the water had double digit releasers during those two days. Now the boats are getting a couple here and there, some nice dolphins, kingfish on the troll, bonitos, an occasional wahoo and blackfin tuna. The day I got out there we hit one spot that was loaded with big tarpon but they wouldn't look at our handpicked shrimp. We did manage a few Spanish mackerel, a juvenile kingfish, bonito, lesser amberjack that almost got eaten by a bull shark, a yellowtail and a couple of bluerunners.
The only place recently that I have had decent fishing has been in Flamingo in Everglades National Park. Besides the incredible scenery and wildlife picture opportunities the fishing has been worthwhile. Even here we have had to work hard for a catch but the catches have been there. We have had slot size snook, slot size redfish, sea trout, jacks, ladyfish, snapper, tripletail, cobia, Spanish, mackerel and more.

Fall is here and the fishing in South Florida is about to explode. As more and more baitfish schools push into our waters more and more predators will be following and feeding on these baitfish giving my clients plenty of opportunities at some great catches. I look for snook, tarpon, mackerel, large jack crevalles, large ladyfish, snappers, groupers, sea trout, barracudas and more to feeding from sunrise to sunset in North Bay. South Bay will see plenty of action from snapper and groupers as well as mackerel, bluefish and pompano. Offshore we will see kingfish and Spanish mackerel, bonitos, sailfish, dolphins and blackfin tuna feeding right alongside each other. In Flamingo in Everglades National Park we will see the return of all of the migratory birds as they fill the park and make unbelievable sunrise pictures. Fishing for snook, redfish, sheepshead, blackdrum, snapper, sea trout, jacks ladyfish, sharks, tripletail, cobia and more will be as e exciting light tackle fishing as one could wish for.
