Awesome Lagoon Fishing

Capt. Joe Porcelli
March 14, 2009
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The snowboarding was awesome in WV but it is so nice to come home to the warmth. The Lagoon fishing has been very good to us with big reds and numbers of slot fish. We literally dropper baits 12 feet away from our bow as we toyed with the slobs that were eyeing up our offering. I say the school probably had a hundred and fifty fish from 30 to 50 inches long we were on this morning. We had one fish (ended up being a 45 inch fish) bat at the twitching bait five or six times before clobbering it on the surface. When other baits don't seem to work such as shrimp or dead mullet. Try using a Gulp Shaky Shad in greenback pearl and hook it Capt. Joe style with a kayle hook in the nose or with a jig head. Fish it erratically to get the strike or dead stick it. I read the fish and let them determine how they want it. This day they wanted it fast and furious as they crashed many of our Gulp shads on the surface like top water plugs.

Trout are going off but they are moving around a bit and feeding heavily on this full moon and shrimp run. I can really tell a difference when I go from one zone to the next to get out of the tidal dependant fish that have feed through the night. We have been drifting the flats and catching our best trout on Gulp Jerk Shads in chartreuse and new penny. Rigger capt joe style seems to work best for me. Don't let one sand spot go by with out working your Gulp through it. Just assume their is a fish in it, or at least treat it as such. If you are drifting to fast you will miss a lot of shots. That is where a Power Pole shines, pole down and work them all. I stop and fish more thoroughly more often because of my power pole.
We have been taking a few black drum on crabs in the mix as well. If you want to learn or just catch fish give me a call and I will be sure you do. 386-314-5656
