Chewing the bottom of the boat

Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The cool mornings and pleasant days are telling us fall is near in Central Florida. The Lagoon is on fire with limits of trout all week and cruising tarpon on the flats. Pitch to these shiners on steroids they will take a bait as seen two days ago. Tarpon are also all over the river and at the inlet. Reds are plentiful and will take Johnson Silver Minnow spoons and Gulp crabs and shrimp. The ladyfish frothing still continues in the mud aria and along any drop off where the fish have the bait backed up against the flat. Pompano are along the deeper troughs in the same aria and will hit a small chartreuse Gulp squid. The snook are at the docks and around some select mangroves and I like the outgoing tide to catch them.

Ponce inlet has reds, black drum, mangrove snapper, snook, tarpon and cuda being caught daily. Bluefish and whiting are also being caught in good numbers.

I stopped to cast net bait for an off shore fishing trip and the tide was real high so I decided to not catch bait and rely on Berkley Gulp alone. We caught our bait as we caught fish on our Gulp shrimp, squid and crabs on some ledges I know. Most of the time the Gulp bait would slide up the line and we could reuse it several more times. It beats the heck out of using a bait you get one bite on and it's gone. Try it you will be surprised. Use a 2/0 or 3/0 circle hook w/sliding barrel sinker and hook the shrimp in the nose Capt. Joe style.
On this trip we caught more than a hundred fish including sea bass, grouper, triggerfish, yellow tail, vermilion and lane snappers, along with some flounder.
We caught four dolphin but they were small and left the other hundred + grow a little.
Don't pass that ray buy with out checking him for cobia because they are still around.
That goes the same for floating debris.
Other species we are taking are kingfish sailfish and amberjack.
