Daytona Beach Area, NewSmyrna Backcountry, Mosquito Lagoon Flats

Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Summer 2014 is winding down now in September, but the water is still warm, early fall fishing patterns will be coming soon, the annual baitfish migration starting with the first signs of "scout" mullet schools beginning to appear, to be followed by the mass of mullet schools to follow as they head south. September and October are the fall migration months here in coastal East Central Florida including Mosquito Lagoon, New Smyrna Beach, and Daytona Beach. Summer local mullet schools are still in force on the flats of the lagoon however, early mornings stacked up on flats edges making for good areas for early Redfish and Seatrout targeting. Water levels are up after a good rainy season along with cloudy water in many areas which is normal for late summer, but the water is still somewhat clear for sight fishing on many flats with healthy grass beds. Indian River backcountry mixed bag fishing has been good all summer with most trips up to 15 different species caught. Both Spotted and Silver Seatrout, Mangrove Snapper, Black Drum, Whiting, Croakers, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, Sheepshead, and always a few surprise species caught. My mixed bag trips are a fun easy style of catching with light spin tackle catching large numbers of these different saltwater species, great wildlife viewing also on every trip out with Bottlenose Dolphin, Manatees, and all types of birds. Repeat clients Dr. Jim and Sue brought the grand kids from Pennsylvania out a couple times on mixed bag trips recently and young Vivien had a great battle with this good size Black Drum, grandpa Jim also caught a Drum of the same size..............

A triple Redfish hookup, sight cast from a cruising school resulted in this triple catch photo, all fish fought and landed at the same time........................

Regular longtime clients Benito and Jason from Orlando had fun on their flats trip, although a tough bite that morning, still catching 5 Redfish including a few of them 27' to 30" size................
