Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

New Smyrna Beach,Daytona Beach and Mosquito Lagoon Fishing report.

It feels as though this year has flew by at the blink of an eye and here we are coming up on 2016. The weather conditions this year have been very abnormal to say the least. With air temps in the 80's in mid December and very few cold fronts showing up this year the fish are still in there summer /fall time patterns. The cold fronts are what supply the winds we need to lower the water level in the lagoon system. So with the higher water and higher than usual water temps the red fish and trout are still holding on the shallow grass flats mixed in with the pods of bait fish. In the northern part of the lagoon around New Smyrna and Edgewater look around the oyster bars that are holding bait and you will find a mixed bag of fish from redfish, trout, flounder and snook. As far as southern lagoon the water clarity has been hit or miss with some locations being very clean and others very dirty. With that being said the sight fishing has been good in certain loactions. I like to throw plugs in the early morning then switching to ADL spoons and soft plastics as the sun gets higher, The flounder have been moving in thick around New Smyrna and Edgewater and can be caught bouncing the bottom with a soft plastic or shrimp on a jig head. The trout bite has been good through out both the north and south lagoon system. A free lined finger mullet is a great choice if you are trying to target that trout of a life time.
Good luck and be safe!
