End Of The Year Reds!

Capt. Drew Cavanaugh
December 28, 2008
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well, it has come. The end of the 2008 season & year is here. With this said, the past couple of weeks have been epic. The fish are roaming the flats just like a kid in a candy store. However, they have been very nervous, and with good reason.

Redfish and drum are very plentiful on the flats throughout the Mosquito Lagoon. The fish are getting a lot of pressure from anglers. As always, approach these fish with stealth. Like I have said a few times, this time of year I prefer to go after my fish from say November up until the high waters of summer in June, I use my push pole. It takes a bit more effort but the rewards are ten times greater. The past weeks numerous of fish have been boated and released...I mean a ton of them by very happy clients. It allows you to go real skinny. Believe me the fish are skinny, very skinny. Also with the calm waters in the morning the noise factor alone makes up for it. This is the time of year a canoe is a deadly weapon out there.

The reds have been feeding aggressively in the morning and actually throughout the whole morning. Use a live shrimp well placed by them. Nice trout can be seen all over too. Gulps work well too if you want to go the artificial route. Top water has been productive as well for nice trout along grass edges and banks.

I want to wish every body out there a safe and happy holiday-New Year.

Call today to book the trip of a lifetime.
See you on the water.
