Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

July 2016

New Smyrna Beach , Daytona Beach and Mosquito Lagoon

The weather has been very hot and so has the bite here in New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito lagoon. We have had some great days here on the Lagoon with many double digit days of trout and redfish and including many slams. I have been targeting bait pods early in the morning holding on the edges of the flats. You will find trout, jacks and many other game fish holding under and around the bait . They have been very receptive to several different baits from soft plastics to live bait and also plugs . As the mid day approaches and the sun gets a little higher look for the trout to move off the edges to deeper water. The redfish have been holding on top of the flats early tailing in the grass and cruising along the shorelines looking for a easy meal. They have been eating several types of baits from cut bait and live bait to soft plastics and personal favorite a Aqua Dream Spoon . Just like the trout the reds have been changing their habits by mid day and moving into the pot holes and deeper sloughs looking for a little cooler water conditions on the flats. The tarpon have made a apperance inshore and off the beaches in full force. Make sure you up size your tackle when going after these beast, most of what I have been seeing inshore has been the 80lb to 100lb class including the juveniles in the 20lb class. The beach tarpon are another story with many fish 100lb and larger cruising the beach. I like to throw suspending plugs , twitch baits and soft plastics along with a variety of live baits .
Good luck and be safe.
