Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report
The reds have been schooled up on a few of the flats due to the unusual low water. Some of the flats look like your yard from a distance. Grass is exposed in arias that are almost always covered by water. We watched tails for hours today glistening from the early morning sun. They seemed to be in a trance for hours trying to get shallow and forage. I had Buzz and son Robert Law out and they each caught many redfish and two that went 33 and 34''. We only pitched at the over slot fish at the end of the day when I saw a fish crash a mullet about three hundred feet away. I eased over and we pitched about a third of a ladyfish in front of the red sea. Buzz hooked up pretty quick and we ended this day with a faunally.
Last week Jimbo Story and his friend Chris brought their two daughters Jordan and Olivia both 11yo to the lagoon to catch some fish. That is just what they did, they caught many trout and a few redfish and a black drum. The reds have been stacked up and with the proper approach they will eat most of the time. This time of the year the pin and pig fish are so thick your shrimp will only last twelve seconds. That is why I use so much Berkley Gulp and Power bait instead of shrimp. The piranhas will not tear the Gulp up but will pick at it for quite some time. When the pin and pigfish are trying to eat it the reds move in on the frenzy and want to get some. I can not tell you how many times this will happen. Like I was saying about the water level it is really low now so be extra careful. The manatees are destroying all the grass flats in Florida we don't want to be like the manatee.
