Fishing report Sept 2013 Mosquito Lagoon and nearshore New Smyrna Beach

September is here and we have the fall mullet run starting and with that Tarpon are on the beach and in the lagoon , Bonita are crashing bait along the beach these guys are a blast for a strong pull and can be caught on fly . If you have never caught Bonita they are pound for pound some of the fastest fish in the ocean , not great for table fair but a lot of fun for novice and expert fisherman . Cobia should be showing up on the beach and are still around the reefs and wrecks near shore and the King Mackerel can be caught trolling live bait or drone spoons. In the lagoon the water is cleaning up and the fishing can be fun for sight casting , fly fisherman as well as live bait fisherman . We are finding reds on the flats tailing and cruising the edges of shorelines . Trout can be found on drop offs and in the bait pods . Tarpon are in there usual spots as well as a few new areas feeding on crabs , mullet and pig or pin fish . Best baits for the artificial guys are Z-Man paddle tails fished weedless slow rolling in front of the reds and trout or Top water using Skitterwalks of Bite-a-bait plugs in the clean water . For the live bait guys you have lots of choices live finger mullet, pig fish or cut mullet will bring big rewards . Get out and enjoy the water .
