MosquitoLagoon Backcountry NewSmyrna DaytonaBeach

Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Summer is knocking at the door in East Central Florida, fishing patterns transitioning to warm water on Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River Backcountry. Mullet schools building in numbers, fish becoming more scattered through out the lagoon and backcountry, beautiful calm mornings with afternoon clouds and cooling sea breeze coming off the ocean. Warming water also means small finger mullet in shallow water during early morning hours to be caught for great live baits as well as live pigfish growing to bait size as summer arrives. My summer tactics include shallow water Redfish hunting the flats of Mosquito Lagoon, Seatrout are always a summer target species also, some of the largest Trout of the year come to the boat during the summer months flats fishing. Edgewater backcountry mixed bag trips are always fun fast action catching many different species on every trip out, light spin tackle makes for fun easy catching. Steve from Tennessee set up 2 trips with me recently, with his kids on one of the days and with adults on the second trip, both good fast mixed bag action, plenty of Trout, Mangrove Snapper, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, and more in the mix, top fish for the trips was a 30" Snook which came to visit for CPR, Catch Photo Release............................

The biggest battle of the trips was the 45" Shovelnose Shark Steve landed on the light backcountry tackle..............................

I was invited to be in a multiple boat corporate charter out of Oak Hill, fishing the flats was the order of the day, so Redfish hunting we went, it was a little slow but we had several good bites and Reds landed, Allison with hers.................................

............and Spencer caught a good one also, this Redfish a rare one with no spots at all................
