New Smyrna Beach Backcountry Daytona Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Michael Savedow

Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Spring 2015 fishing patterns are in full swing here in East Central Florida, inshore saltwater migrating fish are passing through the Indian River on the intracoastal waterway area and backcountry of Mosquito Lagoon, New Smyrna Beach , and Edgewater. Big schools of fun hard fighting Bluefish and Jack Crevalle have been thick for the last couple weeks, joining all of the local resident inshore fish Seatrout, Black Drum, Sheepshead to name just a few of the different fish we usually catch on my backwaters mixed bag fishing trips with usually about 10 or more species each trip. In the last couple weeks clients also have caught Pompano, Flounder, Mangrove Snapper, Whiting, and others. Fun light tackle fishing freeline style with live shrimp and small lures. Here is young Cade with a great Sheepshead from a late winter trip with his family, one of several sheeps they caught along with many Blues and more.............................

Redfishing on the flats of Mosquito Lagoon is always on my mind also, sight fishing is the winter/spring pattern with schooling Reds in shallow water, visually spotting the groups of fish, watching for wakes and in best case scenario tailing Reds like new clients Joe and Jeff from Buffalo NY got to see with me from over size fish feeding in the grass on a pretty calm early morning, well placed select size shrimp sight casting to the fish hooked up Joe with this 29" Redfish......................

We caught back up with the school and Jeff hooked up with his 28" spot tail beauty............................

New clients from Canada, Marylee and Gordon went out 2 days with me, also sight fishing Reds one day, a few were landed and a few pulled hooks, the lady had best luck here with her 33" fish.........................

Gordon caught the best fish on our mixed bag trip with a quality size Black Drum which was hiding in a deep hole in the Edgewater Backcountry and just had to have his live shrimp....................

New client Jim from New Jersey wanted to experience for the first time Redfishing on "The Lagoon" and had a great time seeing many fish waking in schools and also tailing on the grass flats, sight catching 4 Reds from 27" to 30" including this very cool, 12 spot fish......................

Many time repeat clients Matt and family from Kentucky had a very fun variety fishing backcountry trip a few days ago, catching loads of Blues, Jacks, Sheepshead and more, young Drake also caught a nice Seatrout......................
