World Record drum and slob reds

Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Mosquito Lagoon water level has come back up for the spring transition and the fish have spread out a little. We took redfish, trout, tripletail, ladyfish, bluefish, jacks and black drum this week. When things got tough one day this week on the full moon, I took my guys over to do a little jigging along the clinkers with some Gulp baits. At the end of the day when other boats caught nothing, we caught fish only on Gulp. I did point this out to them at day's end when we had live shrimp in front of hundreds of red fish and they would not eat.

It was tough on a few of those full moon days, then things were back to normal. That full moon day we still caught 13 fish ( on Gulp). It would not have been tough but when you can't fish optimum times you will have days when it will be challenging. Break out all your tricks or just break out the Gulp! We bounced Gulp shrimp and Jerk baits off the bottom and it kept little six-year-old Ben busy pulling fish in. When you can fish the moon instead of the sun you will catch more fish in the lagoon.

Snook and flounder are a few other species you can fish in the Indian River system here in Volusia County. This is when you want to fish the line siders on top water plugs. When the mullet are coming from the deep canals and into the river and the snook are busting them up! Work every dock bulkhead and piling you come up on and you will pull a few out. Make sure you use SpiderWire UltraCast so your snooky will not take you for a trip down barnacle lane. Set your drag tight and tie good knots because I know that my Soron STX 60 drag will hold him, will your reel? I have been testing them for the past year and these are not your ordinary tweetie birds. ABU Garcia has out done themselves this time, try one I think you will like em. Heather Harkavy did, she put her ABU Garcia to the test and broke the Black Drum JR. Woman World Record with it. Jeff (dad and Heather are to come and fish for somemore records this year and I will keep you posted. To catch fish think like a fish! or just call me at
