Red Hot in the Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
June 27, 2009
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Mosquito Lagoon is on fire these days. Trout action is in full swing with pigfish at the perfect size for bait. Knowing how to work a pigfish is important. I have watched two anglers side by side working pigs with one getting bites and the other is watching. Fishing is not luck all the time but a skilled full anglers are just luckier. Listening and watching others will allow you to hone in your skills to be a successful pigfish fisherman. It is well worth the money to hire a guide and learn some of the tricks with this type of fishing. Pigs are going for about .40 cents apiece and you can go through a hundred in a few hours and not have a limit of fish if you do not know what you are doing. Lots of fish in the Lagoon like to eat pigfish besides trout. Such as reds, snapper, grouper, ladyfish, black drum, snook, jacks, tarpon and flounder. And anyone of these fish are in the lagoon now eating something.

Down in south Florida when I was 14 years old we used pigfish AKA grunt for bait to catch cuda's in Biscayne Bay. When I was working as a mate on a sport fishing boat in Miami the first sailfish I assisted was caught on a pigfish. Mutton snapper love them as well. Fact is if you catch one big enough I like em fried. LOL Lady fish and jacks are boiling the water in the lagoon in arias such as the mud and out side tiger shoal. Work a Berkley Power Bait (pogy style) extremely fast across the surface and you will get nailed. Fly rodders can have a blast with these ferocious critters. Tarpon are right behind the schools of ladyfish just waiting for one to make a mistake. We have also been fishing the near shore waters off the beaches for tarpon cobia and big jacks. Sharks come around every now and again to mix things up. This is where you will get to test out that new Abu Garcia Soron 807. Large drag surface for smooth non-jerky runs and its nice big grip on the handle make this a comfortable reel to fight big fish. See cobia in shot that was caught with a Berkley PowerBait Power Mullet in the 5'' size. Think like a fish to catch fish, or just call me. 386 314 5656
