Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report
The beginning of the week brought high winds and high water levels to Mosquito Lagoon. With air temperatures in the 80's and water the mid 70's, fishing was more like spring or fall than mid winter. Strong winds confined us to a protected shoreline for most of the day on both Monday and Tuesday but we saw plenty of reds and trout both days.
Sunday I fished with Mark and his dad. Using 4" DOA CAL tails, they both caught fish including this nice redfish by Mark.
Monday was both cloudy and windy so we resorted to blind casting the sand holes with various soft plastics. Mike from Sanford hooked up with four reds on a DOA including this fish he saw tailing near the shoreline.
Tuesday saw a sudden drop in temperatures and the water level dropped over 6 inches. Paul Huffman and I fished the Lagoon yesterday and caught 6 reds and 6 trout on DOA CAL tails and topwater baits. This redfish was tailing in about two feet of water and quickly inhaled a gold jerk bait.
Many of the redfish are tightly schooled but have been extremely spooky. With the cooler water the last few days, more big trout are heading for the shallow sand holes and will eat a well placed soft plastic. On the days when the winds are manageable, sight fishing with the fly remains an excellent choice.
