Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
March 21, 2002
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

I have been on the water for the last eight days with great results catching reds especially. We have been tossing shrimp at them for the most part but after we catch a couple out of the school we will go to soft plastics. I have been using the new Xtract’R a lot with very good results. I fished a day out of town in St Augustine and caught seven reds learning some new water I have never fished before. We also took some trout and flounder working them on the bottom. On the flats I use just a hook hooked in the nose of the plastic. You can crank it slow or on the surface like a buzz bait. On the surface it will pull a fish from a far to see what the noise is all about. Gator trout are hanging on the out skirts of the many schools of red fish that I have been fishing.

I had John Peterson and his friend Tony out this week and they as several other clients got to enjoy the perfect weather we have been having in Florida. The fish are in fins about the perfect weather because they have been chewing the bottom out of the boat. Our average day in the past five has been fifteen fish per day for the past week. I would say ninety five percent of the time we a sight casting at the schools that I am on. Not only have we been fishing schools of reds but they have been tailing like crazy. I don’t know of a better target to toss your offerings at than some exposed tail, sometimes twenty are up in a small radius. It has been push button this past week, if your are not careful these types of fishing trips will spoil you.

Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
