Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
April 2, 2002
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

I have been on the water so much lastly I forgot what color my house was, fourteen days fishing strait and three more to go before a day off. No complaints just busy. Fishing has been good for a few days and then a tough one comes along. In the north end of the Mosquito Lagoon we fished a calm morning after the full moon and we had a time getting the fish to sit still to get a shot at them. We were o for five on the hook ups to start then we managed to finish up the morning with six reds to twenty-seven inches. The night before the shrimp and crabs ran like dogs at the kennel club. I had been fishing a black drum trip the night before this morning and watched shrimp and crabs flow for hours. I couldn’t stand it I had to dip a few small crabs for the reds to snack on. The bite came late in the morning as it does following a full moon with a run of shrimp. Further south the fish were more aggressive and were a lot more corporative.

The lagoon flats have been holding some spring flounder, we took one a few days ago casting a spoon and a few more early in the week. The trout we have been catching have been good size that is the ones we are taking on lures such as the Xtract’R by 12 Fathom and the top dog Jr. Some blue fish are in the river and will get you out of house and home if you let them. Trout are also in the river around the many docks that line the west shore in Edgewater. I like the out going tide for numbers and the incoming for size. Since the moon is shrinking thing are back to normal the fish have been a lot more aggressive in the morning. A live jumbo shrimp should do the trick for the reds. If it is calm throw a smaller one so the splash does not spook your target.

Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
