Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli

Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

I have been out of town for a few weeks and now that I have had a full week of fishing in I have something to type here for you. Steve Booth joined me for a half day and took eight reds and ten trout. The charter I had next was Pat and Bill Griggs and they took eight reds and one two-pound trout on plastics. Yesterday Gary Duke came solo to catch twenty-four trout to five pounds and four reds to thirty-two inches. The wind was blowing twenty-five miles per hour and the fish were chewing 12 Fathom Slam’Rs in pumpkinseed and chartreuse. Gary took every fish on soft plastics. Mater of fact I only killed one shrimp this week and it did not even get used.

Here is why, in the Mosquito Lagoon now there is an abundance of pin and pigfish that will eat a shrimp in seconds. So the reason the 12 Fathom Slam’Rs and Xtract’Rs are doing so well for us is that we are able to cover a lot of water fan casting ahead of our drift. We took several gator trout this week on the soft plastics as well as reds, jacks, ladyfish and a flounder every now and again. We have even taken pompano on mean green Slam’Rs in the goon. If you have not fished with this 12 Fathom jerk bait you need to give it a try. I fished a tournament this weekend and it was the only think I could get the reds to eat on the West Coast last week. If you are going to toss a shrimp you need to make a perfect cast in the twenty plus MPH wind we have had only a few of our fish were sight casted to this week and that was incredible in these conditions. Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
