Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
June 24, 2002
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Despite all the rainy weather we have had the past week the fish have been aggressive. The week started with Wendell Ferdic and Scott catching fifteen trout and three redfish on pigfish. The next day was almost a carbon copy but better, with Charlie and Keith taking twenty trout to four pounds and a few reds to twenty-seven inches. The day after that was even better. Today we caught twelve trout and redfish to forty- six inches on eight pound Stren.

Most of the reds we have been taking on the Mosquito Lagoon flats have been on the slam”Rs in salt and pepper color. Work them slow for the lazy fish or fast to make them mad. I notice when I bring the 12 Fathom Xtract’R to the surface it attracts a lot of fish. The soft plastic bait works like a buzz bait when you bring it to the surface. There is nothing like seeing a big redfish hump up behind your noisy Xtract’R. What ever you do don’t stop winding or the fish will veer off and give you the fin. Twitching at this point is also not recommended but slowing down will give the fish a chance to catch the bait. Then again I have had them flank off at any change. Sometimes it is just better to watch them hit the surface and try to roll on it. I would try these plastics and see what you think. Clients this week took some nice reds in very little time blind casting ahead of our drift. Then again, I am sure knowing where the fish are has a little something to do with it.

Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
