Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report
The first charter of the week went as such, it seemed the fish we were around were sluggish and were not very aggressive. After the sun came up and a few hours had past the fish turned on. Dan and (Happy Birthday Dave) Kudlac got to witness tails and fish snubbing our baits early on in the morning. Then a few boats cleared in a spot on the flat I was tiring to get to all morning. Just as I suspected clean water and hungry fish. Dan and Dave caught nine reds to forty-four inches and a nice gator trout we had boat side but did not weigh. They took the reds and trout on dead finger mullet. The Lagoon is also showing good numbers of tarpon rolling in the usual spots, to many to list. Finger mullet and pigfish will get you a strike, keeping one on the hook is another story.
In the Indian River mangrove snapper and sheepshead are at the bridges and lining the Indian River drop offs. Small pinfish or pilchard will do the trick for the mangrove snapper. The sheepshead will eat shrimp and fiddler crabs that march the shorelines of the river.
Jacks and ladyfish are in the river eating shrimp and finger mullet on the surface. This always gets clients fired up about fishing when they see the explosions in the morning. Sometimes clients want to catch a few for a warm up, but I always tell them they may want to save their arms for the reds.
Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
