Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli

Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing in the Lagoon has been good on the flats for reds and trout. I had Paula and Allen Alshouse out for their anniversary; there is not a better place to spend a day with your loved one. The setting was perfect slight breeze from the southwest sun at our back and fish all over. We were casting finger mullet at the reds and they were not turning to many offers down. They caught sixteen reds from eighteen to thirty inches on Stren eight-pound line. All the fish were released to catch another day. They had so much fun they are coming back in a few days.

The trout have been feeding good on pigfish and mullet and we took several gators in the mix with a lot of slot size fish. Fish the flats drop offs and the clinker islands. I like fishing the clinkers when the tide is moving. Watch out for those manatees around the clinkers, they travel up and down the outer edges of the islands in a north and south pattern. I have never seen so many manatees in all my life. I suspect that they will eat all the grass in the lagoon and they as well as the fish will fade away. The grass is so important to the estuary system and care should be taken when running your boat on the flats. Last week I witnessed to many boats running a ground harming the flats and maybe the passengers in the boat. Study a chart and learn the water before you go racing across an aria. Go slow if you don’t know what is under the water. Be safe and think before you sink.

Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
