Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
November 2, 2003
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

For the past several days the wind has upped the challenge for sight casting. Yesterday I had Joe and Jim out for a short day and they managed to take several nice reds in the slot and one oversize fish. The water can be cloudy on one section of the flat and clear a couple of hundred feet away. We saw a lot of fish on the edge of the murky water waiting for a bait to swim out of the cloud. We tossed finger mullet for the past few days with many mullet out swimming the reds and trout. The fish would chase the bait for a few feet and then turn off if the bait looked too energetic. Cindy and I have been catching some black drum, reds and trout on our last few trips. I like to eat the small blacks (two to four pounds) and we take a few for dinner and release the others. We never keep the big black drum we catch knowing they will reproduce and keep the stocks healthy.

Remember that trout can not be taken for the next two months in our region. Be careful releasing the trout they are very delicate unlike the red fish. Do not use a rag when handling them, I do not even touch the fish most of the time. I release them at boat side with a hook remover and if the hook is two deep I cut the line as short as possible. It looks like the wind will calm down in a few days and the sight casting will be easier for everyone. If you have trouble slowing your finger mullet down toss a 12 Fathom plastic that you can control. Good luck.
