Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
February 15, 2004
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The two days we managed to get out last week were awesome, considering we had to fish between the fronts. We managed to bag thirty reds on Saturday and all the fish we caught with the exception of a few were sight casted too. The reds have been schooled up in the north end of the Mosquito Lagoon this past week and much of the same is in store for us for the next week. We have been tossing shrimp at them to start and then going to plastics.

We caught sixteen reds to thirty inches on the only other trip I had last week. The weather has been off and on and when it’s on the fishing has been on fire. Nothing like seeing a school of five hundred redfish swimming in file waiting for a shrimp to fall from the sky. Saturday’s clients were seasoned anglers coming to the flats and they were astounded of how many fish were in front of our boat. Cast anywhere I announced and we had the triple on before you knew it. I said we have to get at least one triple today that meant I tossed a bait out after the clients were hooked up. Only to let them real the fish in after they got the one in they had on.

The trout have been in a little deeper water this past week making jigging a very successful way of taking a trout. I like the slam’Rs in the pumpkinseed color this time of year in the Mosquito Lagoon. The mean green works better in the spring but now pumpkinseed is the bait of choice if you ask me. The trout have been eating the same plastic this month with our boat taking trout to seven pounds. Make long cast way ahead of the boat while you drift along the shallows. Be cautious the water is still real low.
